Under the first light of dawn, the crew of the Amtrak/NCDOT "Piedmont" pulls their train out of the yard and down to Boylan Junction. Once past the junction, they will make a reverse move on the far-right track to spot the train at the Raleigh station in preparation for the first train of the day to Charlotte.
It's still awfully quiet on the outskirts of downtown Raleigh before 7am. Quiet, that is, except for the punctual double-shot on the horn and the whine of the locomotive smoothly accelerating it's short passenger consist up to track speed. An on-time departure from the capital city.
A departing Norfolk Southern freight train and an arriving Amtrak train converge at Boylan Junction in Raleigh.
